Malaysia’s Masterchef Chef
Ezani comes to Adelaide..
Masterchef has taken the
world by storm and Malaysia is no different. With season 1 of Malaysia’s
Masterchef completed, the Malaysia Carnival in Adelaide made a special request
for 26 year old Dentist and winner Chef Ezani to come down to Adelaide to
partake in a special cooking demonstration for the event.
Chef Ezani arrived in
Adelaide a few days before the Malaysian Carnival to a special dinner held at
Bradford Lodge, where she’d be staying in Adelaide. Funnily enough, Chef Ezani
had previously loved in Bradford Lodge while studying dentistry at Adelaide
Uni, where the Datuk Hassan Salleh happily provided her with the same room on
the seventh floor.
When first meeting her, she
was a calm and collective 26 year old woman, she was charming, very funny and
reminded me of all the qualities that people enjoy to watch on reality
television.
Currently, while taking on
this wonderful opportunity she has post-pone her commitments to dentistry and
has definitely haven’t crossed it off her list.
“Dentistry has always been
something I wanted to do, when I was little at school I always wanted to be a
dentist”
When Ezani arrived back in
Malaysia in December after completing her studies at Adelaide University, she
had to wait until April when she received her diploma before she could begin
working. However, during that waiting period of 5 months she took up one of her
hobbies, cooking.
“I had on my facebook
profile a photo album of all the food I had been cooking during my break I
called “Masterchef Inspired””
From this photo album and
peer pressure from her friends, both factors persuaded her to submit an
application to the Malaysian Masterchef before coming back to Australia in
April to attend her graduation ceremony.
“My thought was “why not? –
there is no harm in trying”
She received an email saying
that she had been accepted for an audition for Masterchef in May. When coming back to Malaysia, Chefi Ezani
still waitig for the call for work in dentistry, so she decided to pursue her
love of food and contined to compet in Masterchef.
“When I actually got the
call for denstisry I was in the top 40 and I had to pick which one I wanted to
do and which one I could do.” So with much thought and consideration she
deferred her employment for the show, think back to the concept of “why not –
there is no harm in trying”.
Throughout her time
competing on Masterchef a lot of her dishes that she enjoyed to create were
salads and desserts. Living in Australia for 6 years gave her the opportunity
to multinational cuisines as Australia has many different types of
international cuisines in one location. She tried to mix it up with a variety
of different styles and cuisine which were natural and rarely ever traditional
Malaysian food.
“Mum cooks amazing tradition
food, so I always tried to cook something different. So I’ll cook western or
different types of Asian cuisines – Vietnamese in particular”
Winning was an incredible
moment for Chef Ezani, she was such a big fan of Masterchef and Junior
Masterchef when in Australia having that surreal moment that she had seen on television
happening to herself – It wasn’t imaginary.
“When I decided to apply for
Masterchef I never aimed to win, that was never the overall goal. I was so
happy to do the show and took it as it came with each step, each challenge that
came my way.”
After winning, a lot of
things came in a variety of different blessings. As we have seen with other
Masterchef winners or contestants, they all follow different paths.
Poh Ling Yeow is currently
running her third season on ABC of her popular tv series “Poh’s Kitchen”
RANDOM: FACT: Chef Ezani once met and haf her photo taken with Poh during the
2010 Malaysian Carnival. , Adam Liew has recently opened a Japanese restaurant
in Sydney and Marion Grasby launched her own line of “Marion's Kitchen food
range” as well as each of them have brought out their own cookbooks.
Chef Ezani is currently
committed to Astro, the first evert High-Definition Broadcast in Malaysia and
has been given a range of opportunities ranging from cookbooks, television
shows and Astro Roadshows.
Chef Ezani is currently
hosting a weekly live talk-show, which is a Malay talk show on an Islamic
channel which incoporates women stories and inspirational stories. As well as
she gets the opportunity to met the various famous people.
Chef Ezani is also the Brand
Ambassador of the latest food product, My Chef which in itself is such a great
achievement. My Chef has microwaveable ready-made meals, which are each
celebrity chef is design 2-3 signature meals. Chef Ezani is the youngest Brand
Ambassador for My Chef and her meals are designed to be less than 400 calories
each with a low salt intake, which is launch this October.
As Chef Ezani is also a
dentist she actively made the decision to produce ready-made meals that
incorporate healthy elements, which isn’t a common idea in Malaysia.
“A lot of Malaysian eating
habits are to eat out or have take away, we have restaurants open 24 hours
everyone. Fast food is incredibly easy to get and find – so my idea is to produce food that is easy and
ready but healthy for your diet”.
Since then she has been
asked to healthy cooking demonstrations, including tips on how to cook healthy.
One in particular healthy food demonstration she had done recently was to cook
healthy snacks for nurses, where she had introduced low fat recipes using
grilled chicken and salsa, which still remained to be healthy but full of
favour.
Chef Ezani has begun
introducing foreign dishes that are healthy as well as salads that use their
natural resources. When growing up in her family household, they naturally ate
a lot of fruit and vegetables and when living away from home allowed her to
explore and different alternative ways to cook healthy.
As previously she had lived
in Adelaide, she has spent some of her down time enjoying the sites again, she
visited Adelaide University where she saw all the new construction of the
buildings, she has visited some friends who once graduated decided to stay in
Adelaide. But the one thing she took an opportunity to do was to shop in
Central Market in the Adelaide CBD, which she has missed since she has returned
to Malaysia.
“I miss the grocery shopping
from Central Market, I think the fresh produce in Australia in general is
amazing, in Adelaide also going to Central Market was an experience it was an
event to do something while in Malaysia it’s not something we appreciate as
much” – however, I’m sure with Chef Ezani’s amazing ambition and her continuous
success she will be changing that.
